DJI announced today the release of the DJI Phantom 4 drone. This was a highly anticipated release especially since the DJI competitor YUNEEC made such a splash with the Typhoon H hexacopter at CES 2016. Well, DJI has answered right back with an all new designed quadcopter drone that will make any drone enthusiast smile. This is especially true when the price was announced at $1,399, instead of the touted $1,700.
Here we are going to look at the highlights that the DJI Phantom 4 offers. We will mainly focus on what is new, and even what is missing when comparing it to its competitors.
ActiveTrack allows the drone to track a subject without a separate GPS tracker. Simply tap on the mobile device screen inside the DJI GO app to select the subject to be tracked. The aircraft will lock on the subject and start tracking it automatically from a safe distance. The drone follows the person you are tracking, not a device like a transmitter or watch.
TapFly means you can fly where you want to, just by touching the screen in a desired area. There is no need for a remote controller. With Obstacle Avoidance turned on, the drone will get out of the way of danger and look for a possible way around to get to the waypoint.
3. Obstacle Sensing System
This is DJI’s obstacle avoidance technology. Once the Phantom 4 senses an object, it stops, hovers or avoids the object, keeping your investment safe.
4. Magnesium Core
The magnesium core allows the quadcopter drone to have rigidity. This makes it much stronger and attempts to fix the issues with cracking that the Phantom 3 has been having of late.
5. Sport mode
Sport mode allows expert drone pilots have greater speeds of up to 44mph.
6. Improved Vision Positioning System
Now equipped with 4 sensors, the DJI Phantom 4 positioning system is more reliable and improves the drone’s hovering capability.
7. New Intelligent Flight Battery
The new battery boosts up to 28 minutes of flight time. So, you will probably get closer to 24 or 25 minutes.
8. 4K Camera Improvements
DJI has improved the image quality of the Phantom 4 by making the lens on the camera have less distortion, giving it l even less of a fisheye effect.
9. Smart Return to Home
This feature is like all return to home features, except it will sense obstacles as it returns and avoid them.
10. Lightbridge Video Feed
Video Feed up to 3.1 miles, or 5km. Far, very far, is there a need to go this far?? Anyway, far.
One thing that stands out as missing on the Phantom 4 is retractable landing gear. This is a let down as new drones like the Typhoon H have this feature. The other feature missing goes hand in hand with that, which is 360 degree panning camera, also available on the YUNEEC Typhoon H.
There are a lot of other features and improvements done to the DJI Phantom 4 drone. Here I covered what I thought to be the top 10 new features on the DJI Phantom 4 drone. We will be testing the Phantom 4 soon and we are excited about what it offers. Leave your comments below and see our YouTube Channel and subscribe at youtube.com/channel/UC92G0tMKWh2jh6b35_rJUuw
